What is a MicroLaser Peel?

The MicroLaser peel, otherwise known as the “weekend peel” is a type of photorejuvenation treatment that uses light technology to enhance the appearance of the skin. The laser grazes over the treatment area, blasting the skin with light energy and removing damaged cells.

The device warms the deeper layers of the skin to promote the growth of collagen (a protein necessary for the reproduction of skin cells). This gentle warming sensation stimulates dormant skin cells, which makes the skin feel tighter, smoother, and softer.

How a MicroLaser Peel Works

The MicroLaser peel aims to enhance the skin’s appearance by destroying the layers of unsightly dead skin and revealing the smooth, supple skin underneath.

The MicroLaser Peel is a reasonably simple procedure that requires minimal preparation and recovery time. However, there are some essential things to keep in mind if you want to achieve the best results.

Before & Preparation

  • Refrain from using products containing retinol at least one day before the treatment.
  • Plan to go straight home after the treatment. Your skin will redden immediately after treatment, so run any errands beforehand.
  • Plan to remain home for 2-4 days so the skin can heal.
  • Avoid smoking for at least two weeks before the treatment, as smoking could delay the healing process.

During the Procedure

  • Treatment takes an average of 30 minutes to complete
  • Your provider will apply a topical numbing cream, allowing fifteen to thirty minutes for the numbing agent to take effect.
  • Your provider will supply protective eyewear.
  • The device will scan over the skin and administer light energy to the treatment areas.

Aftercare & Recovery

After the procedure, your skin will feel warm and tight, similar to a sunburn. This is normal and will last for two to four days. For the best results, you are advised to take the following precautions:

DO:
  • Go home after treatment (your skin will redden)
  • Be patient and allow the skin to peel away on its own
  • Use only gentle cleansers and moisturizers immediately after the treatment.
  • Use sunblock for the next six weeks.
  • Practice healthy and effective skincare habits (eg. using dermatologist-recommended products)
  • Use Aquaphor or Vaseline to soothe the skin and aid in healing.
  • Refrain from being around places with steam (eg. hot tubs)

DON’T:
  • Pick at your skin after treatment
  • Use acidic skin products or those that contain retinol
  • Spend extended periods in the sun without sunblock
  • Forgo proper skin care and use low-quality skin products
  • Allow your skin to become too dry

Areas being treated will be thoroughly cleansed, and your eyes will be covered by safety shields. Dr. Nazarian will set the laser handpiece above the skin and keep it steady as the computer-led scanner moves the laser beam around the skin. Depending on the size of the area being treated, the entire procedure usually lasts no more than 30 minutes.

One of the major benefits of MicroLaserPeel is that the procedure causes little to no pain because it primarily deals with the top layers of the skin. Most patients can tolerate the treatment with no anesthetic at all, but a topical numbing cream is typically used for deeper settings.

Immediately after the treatment, patients may notice that their skin has a “frosty”? look. This is simply the dehydrated skin preparing to peel away within the days following treatment. Some patients can experience mild swelling, slight skin redness and/or a sensation similar to a sunburn.

Most patients feel comfortable enough to return to work within 3-4 days, giving this procedure the nickname “The Weekend Peel.”

On average, a MicroLaser peel will take half an hour to complete, but this time may vary slightly, depending on the amount and size of the targeted areas. Also, prior to the procedure itself, a numbing cream will be applied for approximately fifteen minutes.

MicroLaser peels come with little to no pain. This is because of the topical ointment given to numb the areas. In addition, only the epidermis is being targeted, so the laser is not penetrating deep into the skin. There may be mild irritation which can be relieved with Aquaphor.

Immediately after treatment, you will experience redness and peeling as the dull skin flakes away on its own. This process will continue for approximately 2-4 days. When this process is over, your skin will look and feel smooth and tight.

MicroLaser peels come with a plethora of benefits including but not limited to: the reduction or elimination of acne scars, uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and the like.

A laser peel is superior to a chemical peel in that it is safer; it does not expose the skin to harsh, organ-damaging chemicals. Laser peels can also pinpoint specific areas on the skin that chemical peels can easily overlook.

The healing process takes a few days. However, you will continue to see improvements weeks after the procedure. The results from MicroLaser peel typically last from three to four years, but by taking excellent care of your skin, you can keep it looking clear and youthful.
