Understanding Breast Asymmetry

What Causes Breast Asymmetry?

Breast asymmetry, including differences in the size, shape, or position of the breasts, can result from various factors:

Congenital differences. Congenital differences that affect size, density, shape, or position of the breast tissue or chest wall.

Developmental differences. Hormonal fluctuations, genetics, and variations in breast tissue development during puberty.Genetics. Genes inherited from your parents that affect the size and shape of your breasts.

Hormonal influences. Hormonal changes during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.

Injury or trauma. Trauma to the chest, such as accidents, falls, or surgical procedures.

Breastfeeding. Breastfeeding, particularly if there are differences in milk production or breastfeeding patterns between the left and right breasts.

Benign conditions. Certain benign conditions, such as fibroadenomas, cysts, or other types of benign tumors.

Underlying health conditions. Rarely, underlying health conditions or medical treatments, such as hormonal imbalances, thyroid disorders, breast cancer, or certain medications, may contribute to asymmetric breast tissue.

Weight changes. Significant fluctuations in body weight can impact breast size and symmetry.

If you have experienced a recent change in the size or shape of one or both breasts, Dr. Nazarian may want to diagnose the cause of this change or refer you to a specialist who can do so before moving forward with surgical treatment. In some cases, focal asymmetry may be a symptom of breast cancer.

Tailored Solutions

How Can Asymmetric Breasts Be Corrected?

There are several surgical approaches that can help balance out breast asymmetry. At your consultation, Dr. Nazarian will help you weigh the benefits of various approaches and discuss the best type of surgery for your needs. Visit our breast augmentation, small breast augmentation, breast reduction, and breast lift pages for detailed overviews of the mammoplasty surgeries that Dr. Nazarian specializes in.

Augmentation with implants. Saline or silicone implants of different sizes may be used to balance out differences in breast size, density, and shape.

Augmentation with fat transfer. The fat transfer method of augmentation uses autologous fat grafts (meaning fat harvested from another area of the body) to enhance the shape and contour of the breasts.

Reduction surgery. For women with large breasts, reduction surgery can help to balance out the size and shape of the breasts.

A Multitude of Benefits

What Are the Benefits of Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Some degree of breast asymmetry is common. However, when it causes significant distress or functional impairment, surgical correction can be an important step to improve overall well-being and quality of life.

Improved body image. Breast asymmetry can lead to dissatisfaction with one's appearance and body image. Surgical correction can provide improved self-esteem and confidence.

More clothing options. Breast asymmetry may make it challenging to find clothing, such as bras, swimwear, or clothing with a structured bodice that fits properly and provides adequate support and coverage for both breasts.

Alleviate psychological distress. Surgical correction of breast asymmetry may relieve persistent dissatisfaction with breast asymmetry that contributes to psychological distress, including anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).

Physical discomfort. In cases where breast asymmetry causes physical discomfort or pain, surgery can provide improved comfort, especially during activities such as exercise or prolonged periods of standing.

Better confidence in intimate relationships. Surgery may help diminish feelings of insecurity or self-consciousness that impact intimate relationships and sexual confidence.

Ability to participate in more activities. After surgery, individuals with noticeable breast asymmetry may feel more comfortable participating in certain activities, such as swimming, changing in communal areas, or participating in sports.

Weighing Your Options

Am I a Candidate for Surgical Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Anyone with significant breast asymmetry that causes psychological distress or physical discomfort may benefit from surgical correction. Candidates for cosmetic breast surgery must have fully developed breasts, and be in general good physical and mental health. Those with breast cancer, an abnormal mammogram, an active infection, or a serious illness may not be candidates. Smokers will need to quit several weeks before surgery and not smoke for several weeks after to ensure proper healing. It’s also important to have realistic expectations. Even after surgery, it’s possible for some degree of asymmetry to remain. However, surgery can significantly improve the symmetry of the size and shape of both breasts, alleviating both emotional discomfort and physical limitations.

What to Expect During Recovery

Breast Asymmetry Surgery Recovery

The recovery period after breast surgery varies depending on the type of procedure and individual healing rates. Most patients need to take one to two weeks off from work and avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for four to six weeks. Your specific recovery timeline will depend on the complexity of the procedure. Our team provides ongoing support and guidance throughout this period, including post-operative checks with Dr. Nazarian and availability to answer questions or concerns at any time.

The Confidence You Deserve

Breast Asymmetry Surgery Results

You will notice some improvement right away. However, your results will continue to improve as post-procedure swelling fades. It can take a few months for the tissues and implants, if used, to settle into their optimal position. Surgical scars will continue to fade over time. Depending on the procedure performed, results can be very long-lasting. Correcting breast asymmetry can have a profound effect on patients’ comfort and self-esteem. Schedule your personal consultation at Nazarian Plastic Surgery to learn how our advanced surgical techniques can help you embrace the confidence you deserve.

Frequently Asked Questions

The type of surgery determines the incision locations. Dr. Nazarian uses expert techniques to minimize visible scarring. Some degree of scarring is inevitable. However, the scars are often well concealed in natural creases. Not smoking, eating a nutritious diet, and practicing good incision and scar care contribute to the best possible outcome.

Breast augmentation using implants typically requires implant replacement at a later date. Barring any complications like implant rupture or capsular contracture, implants have an average lifespan of ten years, but they often last longer. Fat transfer breast augmentation results can be long-lasting. Some fat will be naturally reabsorbed by the body; for this reason, the breasts are slightly “overfilled” with donor fat to compensate for this expected fat loss.

Focal asymmetry means one breast exhibits asymmetry localized to a specific area. Because focal asymmetry can sometimes be a sign of a medical condition, a mammogram is typically indicated before surgery. Global asymmetry refers to an overall difference in breast size and shape not localized to one specific area.

In some cases, asymmetric breast tissue is symptomatic of a hormone imbalance, thyroid disease, or another condition. Focal asymmetry occurs when only a localized area of one breast is unlike the same area on the other breast and can be a sign of breast cancer, demanding further testing. Non-harmful conditions like a benign tumor or a cyst can also cause focal asymmetry.
