What Is a Neck Lift?

A Refreshed, Youthful Neckline

A neck lift, or “lower rhytidectomy,” focuses on tightening, sculpting, and reducing sagging neck skin and fat deposits in the neck and jawline area. This cosmetic surgical procedure is ideal for patients with visible signs of aging in this area, including wrinkles, a “turkey neck,” a double chin, jowls, or vertical neck bands. For some patients, signs of aging show up in this area before the face. Patients with concerns in both the neck and face can choose to combine a neck lift with a facelift for comprehensive rejuvenation. The details of the surgery are personalized to target the patient’s specific signs of neck aging and provide a youthful, sculpted profile that enhances the look of the whole upper body.

What Is the Neck Lift Procedure Like?

What to Expect

Dr. Nazarian performs all cosmetic procedures onsite in our state-of-the-art surgical center. This ensures a seamless experience for the patient.

A neck lift begins with the administration of general anesthesia, although local anesthesia can also be used in some cases. A small incision is placed with great care behind each ear, and sometimes under the chin to minimize visible scarring. Because each patient’s needs are different, the procedure may involve a combination of approaches. The neck muscles may be tightened to restore an uplifted contour. Submental fat deposits under the chin can be removed using liposuction to reduce the appearance of a double chin.

Finally, excess neck skin is trimmed down and redraped before the incisions are meticulously closed. This final step eliminates sagging skin, or what is sometimes called a “turkey neck.” Patients are carefully monitored in our comfortable recovery suite until the anesthesia has worn off. After a neck lift, you can return home the same day with a friend or family member to drive you.

What Concerns Does a Neck Lift Address?

A Multidimensional Approach

Sagging or excess skin

Tightens and lifts skin that has lost elasticity and begun to sag, leading to the formation of jowls or a "turkey wattle" appearance.

Excess fat

Liposuction can be used to remove excess fat under the chin or along the jawline. Reducing the appearance of a double chin creates a more defined jawline and neck contour.

Muscle laxity

The muscles in the neck, particularly the platysma muscle, may become lax or separated, creating the appearance of neck bands or cords. The procedure tightens and repositions these neck muscles to create a smoother and more toned neck appearance.

Neck bands or creases

Horizontal or vertical bands, creases, or wrinkles in the neck area can be addressed during the procedure by tightening the underlying muscles and removing excess skin.

Poor definition of the jawline

Aging or weight loss can contribute to a less youthful or sculpted appearance. A neck lift can help restore a more defined jawline and improve overall facial harmony.

Jowls

Sagging skin and tissue along the jawline, often referred to as jowls, can be lifted and tightened during the procedure to create a smoother and more refined jawline contour.

Am I a Candidate for a Neck Lift?

Embrace Your Essence

Patients seeking a neck lift are typically bothered by the appearance of sagging or loose skin, excess fat deposits, or muscle laxity in the neck and jawline area. The neck’s mobility and frequent exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays make this area particularly susceptible to signs of aging. Neck lift patients must be in good overall health without any serious medical conditions that could impede healing or make surgery risky. Neck lifts are often sought by women and men in their 40s, 50s, or 60s. However, adults of any age who have relatively good skin elasticity may benefit from this surgery.

The first step in assessing your candidacy is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Nazarian. She will learn about your goals and take a detailed medical history to assess your candidacy for this procedure.

Neck Lift Recovery

Following all of the aftercare instructions provided by Dr. Nazarian is essential to achieving an optimal outcome from your surgery. She will check your healing progress at post-operative visits and remain on hand to offer extra information and support throughout your recovery.

Early recovery focuses on minimizing swelling, managing discomfort, and caring for the incision sites to prevent complications. Swelling and bruising are usually at their peak during the first week after surgery. You may need to wear a compression garment to help minimize swelling and support the healing process. Many patients are able to return to light activities or desk jobs two to three weeks after their surgery.

Your optimal results will continue to become more refined over the course of several months as incision lines fade and lingering swelling diminishes. As the soft tissues of the neck and jawline settle into place, your newly sculpted contours and taut, youthful skin texture emerge.
