How the Neck Liposuction Procedure Works
Chin liposuction is a relatively quick surgical procedure, taking 30-45 minutes to complete. Our highly experienced surgeons will inform you of the proper preparation and aftercare to ensure the best results.
Before & Preparation
- Pre Op Consultation: Be sure to provide your complete medical history to your surgeon before the procedure. This will allow the doctor to adjust the treatment plan based on allergies or past surgical history.
- Avoid Smoking and Drinking: Smoking and drinking are major risk factors for poor healing after surgery. Avoid them for at least 2-4 weeks before surgery.
- Food and Supplement Restrictions: Try avoiding foods, drinks, and any supplements, such as vitamin E, omega-3, and fish oil, as they may cause bleeding.
- Avoid Aspirin: Do not take aspirin, Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Motrin, and other blood-thinning medicines. Use Tylenol as an over-the-counter painkiller.
- Arrange a Caregiver: Bring someone who can drive you back home after the surgery and be with you for at least a few hours.
During the Procedure
Chin liposuction typically uses local anesthesia but can be performed with sedatives or general anesthesia based on patent preference.
The process involves the following steps:
- Marking Incision Areas: The whole neck area, including the jawline, is examined, marking the areas for the incisions.
- Skin Cleansing: The skin is cleansed with an antiseptic solution, reducing the risks of infection.
- Numbing Cervicomental Region: The local anesthetic (numbing medication) is injected into the skin to numb the areas, making a comfortable experience for the patient.
- Making Small Incisions: A biopsy punch is used to make small incisions in the skin to insert the suction wand (also known as a cannula) to suction out the fat. The incisions are just large enough to introduce the liposuction cannula.
- Removing Fat: The cannula is inserted and used back and forth to suction out the excess fat until the smooth, defined jawline appears.
- Bandaging the Incisions: The cuts are then appropriately cleaned and bandaged, ensuring the wounds are protected from contamination.
Aftercare & Recovery
The recovery process may differ for each patient, depending on the type of anesthesia used. The patients may feel nauseous and tired if treated under general anesthesia, which can last for several days up to a week. Follow the doctor's instructions carefully to ensure a smooth and fast recovery.
- Chin Strap Support: Wear a chin support garment to reduce swelling and bruises. Wear the garments for at least a week, 24 hours a day. Try to use it for another week or two at night.
- Avoid Strenuous Activity: Desist from lifting heavy objects for a week.
- Keep Right Posture: Sleep without a pillow with your neck extended, ensuring the neck is not squeezed. Follow this routine for a week until further instructions from the doctor.
- Avoid Blood-thinning Medication: Stick to Tylenol for over-the-counter medication until your wounds have fully healed.
- Keep Light Diet: Eat a light, low-fat meal, especially if the treatment was performed under general anesthesia; it tends to make the patients nauseous.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink at least 8 - 10 glasses of water a day.
Am I a Good Candidate for Neck Liposuction?
If you are in good health with a normal weight and good skin laxity, you may be a good candidate for submental liposuction. However, if you have significant loose skin under your chin, you may need to opt for a neck lift instead.
