Arnica, Bromelain, and Vitamin K are widely used pre-procedure in the cosmetic surgery industry for their ability to help minimize bruising and swelling after a surgical or non-surgical procedure.
A bruise is really just the body’s healing reaction to trauma. It occurs when the capillaries, which are your body’s tiny blood vessels, get pierced or cut from:
Blood seeps out of the broken capillaries, gets trapped under the surface of your skin, and a bruise is born. Some patients bruise more easily than others. But anyone who has a non-surgical or surgical procedure is at risk for bruising. This is why Dr. Nazarian recommends bruising treatments for all of her patients — male and female.
One of the easiest ways to treat a bruise is by lowering your risk of developing one in the first place. This is why Dr. Nazarian recommends that all of her patients start on our medical grade Arnica, Bromelain, and Vitamin K tablets two to four weeks before your procedure. These are available for purchase in our Beverly Hills office or online at The Skin Spot (link to the purchase page).
Dr. Nazarian also advises that her patients stop blood thinners, if medically safe, for two weeks prior to their procedure as they can greatly increase your chance of bruising. This includes:
With injectables, in particular, applying ice, and deep breathing during your procedure will also help to decrease your risk of bruising. All of this being said, whenever anything pierces your skin, there is a chance that it will leave a bruise. For this reason, we always advise that you leave at least a 2 week window between your injectables treatment and any important event, just in case.
As discussed, the key with bruising treatments is to start early. Dr. Nazarian recommends medical grade arnica pills for any patient who is undergoing an aesthetic procedure whether it is fillers, CoolSculpting or a breast augmentation. OcuMend® patches are another great option to prevent bruises from forming. She will often use these on her injectables patients. OcuMend™ patches work best when applied within 15 minutes of treatment, and continued overnight. They are available for purchase in-office, and online at The Skin Spot (link to the purchase page). To speed up the healing process, and more quickly dissipate bruises that have already formed, there are two options: Broad Band Light (BBL™), which is a form of photofacial, and the PicoSure laser. The latter works extremely well on hemosiderin staining which can occur after a really intense bruise. Dr. Nazarian also carries a full range of skin care products especially formulated for treated skin that are great for covering up any post op bruising and swelling. This includes tinted sunscreens as well as Oxygenetix, an oxygen rich foundation that provides breathable, full, natural looking coverage.
Just about every patient who comes in to see Dr. Nazarian is prescribed a medical grade compounded pill of Arnica, Bromelain and Vitamin K both with and without Turmeric. Arnica is an herb that has long been embraced for its healing properties, especially its ability to reduce swelling and bruising. Bromelain is a mix of enzymes from the pineapple plant. It also has been proven effective in helping to reduce post op bruising, pain, and swelling. Vitamin K, which is found in leafy green vegetables, is often used by doctors to treat bleeding issues. This makes it a good bruising treatment option. And the spice turmeric is an anti-inflammatory renowned for its wound healing abilities. However, it does thin the blood a bit. For this reason, Dr. Nazarian will give you the compounded pill without turmeric to take before your procedure, and the one with turmeric to take afterwards. OcuMend® patches combine nanotechnology, medical grade arnica, and a ledum hydrogel pad. Clinically proven to prevent bruising, pain and swelling, their potency is 50 times higher than other arnica products. Patients who use these pads after an injectables treatment report reduced bruising, redness and discomfort.
Dr. Sheila Nazarian is the leading board-certified plastic surgeon at Nazarian Plastic Surgery. Experience has allowed for amazing results and satisfied patients across the board.
Yes. When it comes to any kind of injectables, the first thing is to make certain that you see someone with a lot of experience. This will greatly reduce your risk of post treatment bruising. Second, try the OcuMend™ patches immediately after treatment. They are particularly effective with injectable procedures such as Botox, fillers or Kybella. I also have all of my patients take a medical grade Arnica, Bromelain, and Vitamin K pill after injections. If you are a known bruiser, I recommend starting them two weeks before treatment. Also, stop blood thinners for two weeks before your procedure, including alcohol, green tea, herbal medications/teas, and most medications other than Tylenol.
The advantage of bruising treatments is to help speed up your body’s healing process. So, they work best when the bruise is at the red, purple stage. Once the bruise begins to turn yellow and green, you are already well on your way to healed.
I am a big fan of the Oxygenetix line of foundation. It’s why we carry it in our Beverly Hills office. You can also order it online at www.theskinspot.com. It provides the kind of full coverage that you need to camouflage post op bruising and redness. But it looks natural and feels great on the skin because it breathes. It also comes in a full range of color options so it works with all skin tones.
It is impossible to say without seeing you in person or at least a photo. My best advice would be for you to speak with your plastic surgeon. I like to go over all of the bruising treatment options with my patients during their initial consultation. Then, I follow their healing process closely post operatively. At that point, I can give a realistic recommendation in terms of the number of treatments. In our office, BBL™ for bruising is included in your procedure price if your bruising goes beyond one month (which is rare, but it can happen).
