Scar Revision Surgery

• Ensure to disclose your medical history and list of current medications.
• Your surgeon may recommend lab testing or medical evaluation before treatment.
• Your provider may instruct you to adjust or take certain medicines before the procedure.
• Stop smoking well before your procedure.
• Avoid taking aspirin and specific anti-inflammatory drugs or herbal supplements to decrease the risk of bleeding.

• The surgical technique will depend on the scar's type, location, and severity.
• Your surgeon will administer your chosen anesthetic. In most cases, patients utilize local anesthesia. Other options may include intravenous sedation, general anesthesia (for large or sensitive areas), or oral sedation.
• The experienced practitioners will conduct the treatment process. The team may perform scar revision with a single surgical technique or a combination of methods (both surgical and non-surgical).
• Some standard scar revision combination therapies may include injectable treatments (dermal fillers), topical treatments, or surface treatments (chemical peels, laser or light therapies, or dermabrasion).
• Deeper scars often require surgical incisions to remove scar tissue. Advanced techniques may include Z-plasty, Skin Grafting, Skin Flaps, or tissue expansion.
• Some methods may require multiple surgical stages or procedures to achieve optimal results.
• The experienced practitioners will close any incisions with absorbable, non-removable sutures.
• The standard procedure duration is 1-2 hours but may take longer if an area is particularly damaged or challenging.

• Patients are most likely to experience localized swelling, discomfort, or discoloration for 1-2 weeks after the procedure.
• The new scar will gradually heal and fade for several weeks after your treatment.
• Patients can expect to see full results within a year of treatment.
• Most patients can return to normal activities within a few days. Still, they should avoid strenuous activity for at least four weeks.
• Clean, dress and apply ointments to the wounds as directed by your surgeon.
• Avoid hot showers and baths the week after treatment. Take brief (10-minute) warm showers throughout the healing process to avoid irritation.
• Do not rub or pick at the treated area.
• Take medications and supplements as directed by your surgeon.
• Avoid alcohol and smoking the week after treatment.
• Practice proper sun protection throughout the entire healing process for optimal results.
• Discomfort, tingling, or tightness should resolve within a month after surgery.

Dermal Fillers: Dermal Fillers may be injected into depressed scars to reduce the appearance temporarily. Soft tissue fillers such as Juvederm, Radiesse, Restylane, and Sculptra are the most common for scar reduction.

HALO Laser Treatment: The HALO Laser Device emits both ablative and non-ablative laser wavelengths for optimal skin resurfacing effects. Treatment can reduce discoloration, age spots, sun damage, wrinkles, and scarring.

Microneedling: Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure where experienced practitioners use a machine with micro-needles to create small channels within the skin to help your body heal more naturally.

RF Microneedling: In this treatment, a microneedling device emits radiofrequency energy into the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production and break-down scar tissue.

Chemical Peels: Chemical Peel Treatments can be optimized to assist with scar removal. A chemical solution of varying strength is applied to the skin to remove damaged skin cells and improve texture.

5-FU (5-fluorouracil): A non-surgical, injectable treatment to manage and improve problematic scarring. These injections can reduce the chance of recurrence and assist the healing process after a scar revision surgery.

Steroid Injections: This injectable scar reduction treatment helps alleviate symptoms of problematic scarring such as burning, itching, and discoloration. Steroid injections can also help to reduce scar size and soften scar tissue.
