Volume loss is common as you age. As the temples lose volume, they become hollow. They make you look older and less attractive. Its effects could lead to facial imbalance, brow ptosis, and even crow’s feet!

Temple filler treatment, sometimes called the temple facelift, effectively fills these hollows. They restore volume to the temple and make you look more youthful.

Causes of Volume Loss in the Temple

You may wonder what exactly causes the volume loss. A variety of things can lead to loss of volume in the temples.

Below are listed some of them:

  • Elastin and Collagen Loss: As you age, the skin loses elastin and collagen.  It becomes less elastic and begins to sag. This alters the balance of the face and makes you look older.
  • Hormonal Changes: This can also affect the volume of the temple. As some women get to menopause, they notice a loss in temple volume. The hormonal changes consistent with menopause make fat breakdown faster and lead to the loss of the fat pads in the temple area.
  • Extreme Diet and Exercising: Dieting and exercising can lead to rapid loss of fat under the temple. This produces hollow temples and makes your face look older and imbalanced.
  • Genetics: Some people are genetically predisposed to have temple volume loss. That means, if your parents have volume loss in their temples, you are more likely to have it too!
  • Bone Density Loss: As you age, you begin to lose bone density. This makes the temple lose volume and you look older and less attractive.

Ripple Effects of Hollow Temples

When you lose the fat pads in the temple, it doesn’t just affect the temple. It affects other areas of the face. Fixing the hollow temples will also solve these problems it creates!

Facial Imbalance

The removal of the fat pads in the temples significantly impacts the symmetry and harmony of the face. Minimal loss of fat pads shows the profile of the skull and affects balance and harmony in the face. Fillers restore the volume and bring balance back to the face.

Brow Ptosis

When there is volume loss in the temple, the tails of the eyebrows fall. It is called brow ptosis. This looks unappealing and affects the face’s harmony. Adding fillers in the right amount will lift the brows, making the eyes brighter and the face more attractive.

Crow’s Feet

When the skin around the temple loses elasticity and sags, it makes the wrinkles at the lateral angles of the eye—crow’s feet—look worse. Adding volume to the temple with fillers, restores contour and improves crow’s feet.

Midface Descent

When the temples are hallow, the midface falls and results in heavier smile lines. A very natural-appearing way to lift those is with temple filler. Before filling in the laugh lines, we recommend assessing and addressing any temple hollowness first for the most natural results.

Can temple Fillers Lift the Eyes?

Yes, temple fillers lift the eyes! When the temple volume is increased, the eyes look brighter. The shadow cast by the temple when it is not full makes your eyes look smaller.

When you get fillers into the temple, they fill the hollow, raise the brows, contour the temples, and make the eyes look brighter.

How it Works?

A series of things make the temple fillers effective in lifting your eyes. They include:

  • Temple fillers immediately add volume to the hollow temple. This creates a youthful contour and makes your face more balanced.
  • A commonly used filler is hyaluronic acid-based filler. Their molecules retain water and hydrate the skin, giving it a plump, youthful look.
  • The fillers used don’t only add volume to the temple. It also stimulates collagenogenesis. These newly formed collagen molecules restore the skin’s elasticity, making it more firm and youthful.

Temple Filler Procedure

Temple filler treatment is a noninvasive procedure and can be done in the doctor’s office. It causes minimal pain and can be done with a topical anesthetic.

You can use several fillers for this procedure. Your choice depends on your desires and expected results. You can use:

  • Hyaluronic acid fillers. Some examples are Juvederm and Restylane.
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite like Radiesse.
  • Polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) like Bellafill.
  • Poly-L-lactic acid(PLLA) like Sculptra.

The procedure takes 20-30 minutes and you can go home the same day!

Before the Procedure

The treatment starts with consultations. You will meet with one of our experienced doctors who will:

  • Check your general health status.
  • Explore your desires and expectations ahead of the treatment.
  • Discuss the procedure and possible complications.
  • Help you set achievable goals.
  • You will be asked to stop blood thinners, vitamin E tablets, alcohol, and cigarettes at least 1 week before the procedure.

The Procedure

When you come in for the temple filler procedure, here’s what will be done:

  • The specialist cleans the area to be injected with filler.
  • A topical anesthetic is applied to numb the area and reduce discomfort during the procedure.
  • The specialist will carefully insert the needle into the temple and release the filler into the temple.
  • Once done, the temple is gently massaged to spread the filler evenly and prevent bumps and lumps.

Aftercare

The right aftercare is vital to the outcome of the procedure. It minimizes the risk of complications and ensures you’re satisfied with the results.

Here are some guidelines to follow after Temple filler treatment:

  • Avoid strenuous activities and rigorous exercises for 24-48 hours
  • Stay away from the sun as much as possible for at least 48 hours.
  • Don’t sleep on your sides. Sleep face up to avoid applying pressure on the treatment area.
  • Abstain from smoking, alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and blood thinners for at least 24 hours after the treatment.
  • No use of cosmetics for 24 hours post-treatment.
  • Avoid chemical peels, skin needling, laser therapy, etc. for at least 2 weeks after the procedure

Benefits of Temple Filler

You may wonder if you need temple filler treatment and what you stand to gain from it. Here are some benefits of temple fillers:

  • Nonsurgical Facelift: Temple fillers don’t only affect the temples. They also raise the eyebrows and make the eyes look brighter and the face is rejuvenated.
  • Improved Look and Balance: Temple fillers restore balance to the face. This means the face looks smoother, more youthful, and balanced. A temple filler may be all you need to restore face harmony.
  • Firmer Skin: The dermal fillers used in temple filler treatment stimulate the novel formation of collagen—collagenogenesis. This makes the skin firmer and more youthful.
  • Hydrated Skin: After the dermal filler procedure, hyaluronic acid will absorb water and hydrate the skin properly. Your skin will look more supple and radiant.
  • Quick Procedure: The treatment is quick—about 30 minutes and has little or no recovery time!
  • Long-Lasting: With results lasting as long as 12 months, this procedure has a long-lasting effect.
  • Not Permanent: This treatment is reversible. If hyaluronic acid is used, you can reverse its effect if it doesn’t turn out as you want. Using hyaluronidase, you can dissolve the HA filler!

The next time you look in the mirror and see that something about your face looks off and you can’t place a finger on it, remember this article! It may just be that your temples need fillers. Temple Filler FAQs

  1. How long do temple fillers last?
    1. On average, temple filler will last between 9 and 12 months. This depends on the type of filler,  the metabolism of the patient, and the injection technique used during the procedure.
  2. How risky are temple fillers?
    1. Dermal fillers in your temples are largely considered safe as long as you are careful to choose a medically qualified injector who has a thorough understanding of anatomy and knows exactly what they are doing. The temples are one of the most anatomically difficult areas to inject due to the number of vessels in the area as well as the kinds of vessels that are there.
  3. Can I wear glasses after temple filler?
    1. To achieve optimal results, it is important to avoid wearing goggles or eyewear in the days immediately following your filler injections as the pressure of certain types of eyewear could potentially cause your filler to migrate beneath the skin.
  4. Can fillers give you an eye lift?
    1. Yes, fillers can lift the eyes by adding volume to the temples, which can help restore the eyes to their natural position. This procedure involves adding volume in strategic places around the eyes using dermal fillers which are injections of hyaluronic acid and this hyaluronic acid is found throughout the human body. This helps to rejuvenate the eye area thereby giving you an eye lift.
  5. Does temple filler help droopy eyelids?
    1. Yes, temple filler can help with droopy eyelids by lifting the outer brow and eye area. Fillers injected into the fat pad just beneath the brow can help improve the appearance of drooping eyelids. The upper eye area may slightly plump up, which reduces sagging.
