A breast reduction can eliminate back pain, shoulder pain and even make you look leaner. Furthermore, trends these days have shifted towards smaller but still proportional breasts. This makes us happy as it’s always been our aesthetic. While some women just have a genetic abundance of breast tissue, for others, it can result from pregnancy, weight gain, surgical augmentation or menopause. Regardless of the reason, overly large breasts can be physically painful. They may also make you feel dumpy, self-conscious and even keep you from wearing the clothes that you want. A breast reduction is a surgical procedure to reduce breast volume and lift the breasts to a perkier position on your chest wall. Patients who undergo a breast reduction are some of the most satisfied of all plastic surgery patients because this is a procedure that can literally change your everyday life.

After your breast reduction surgery, Dr. Nazarian will place you in a surgical bra. You may have a loose cotton wrap at first to decrease pressure on the nipple area. Dr. Nazarian rarely uses drains in her breast reduction surgeries. All of this will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation. You will be sent home that night. But you will need to take it easy. Someone, whether a family member or friend, should stay with you for at least that first night. And you are going to be restricted in terms of your arm movements for a week to 10 days so plan accordingly — no vacuuming, no organizing the guest closet, and no upper body workouts.
Dr. Nazarian likes for her breast reduction patients to be up and walking as soon as possible. This will get your blood flowing and help reduce any swelling. You will be bruised and swollen following your procedure. This is normal. You should not, however, be in a lot of pain. Most patients describe their recovery as uncomfortable, not painful. It is generally easily managed with over the counter pain medication. But if you need something stronger, Dr. Nazarian will be happy to prescribe a narcotic. The important thing is for you to be comfortable. However, keep in mind that narcotics will slow down your recovery. In general, patients can return to their normal activities and light exercise after 1 week, but need to refrain from exercise and submersion under water for a month.

Will I lose nipple sensation after a breast reduction?
I have a very good track record with this issue. Most patients notice no difference in sensation. Is decreased or loss of sensation a possibility? Yes. It depends on the individual as well as how much volume and skin are removed.
Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?
Many patients find that they can breastfeed after a breast reduction. But there is no guarantee. So, if this is something that is really important to you, my best advice would be to wait and not have surgery until you are finished having children.
What’s the difference between a breast lift and a breast reduction?
A breast reduction is really a breast lift that also removes excess breast volume. Some patients, particularly those whose breasts have dropped post children, don’t actually have an excess in breast volume. Their breast skin has simply stretched. So, lifting the breasts and removing the excess skin is enough. But for patients who have too much tissue, the skin envelope must be reduced and the extra tissue removed. I am terrified that a scar on the breast will make me undesirable. Do you find this to be true? Not at all. What most people find desirable is confidence. Restoring your body to its proper proportion by reducing the size of your breasts is going to make you feel better about yourself. And in my experience, this self-confidence translates into every aspect of my breast reduction patient’s lives.
