A Youthful Labia Majora With Fat Transfer

Fat transfer to the labia majora is a rejuvenating procedure utilizing the replacement of fat to restore a youthful appearance and function. The final result leaves the outer protective tissue tighter and smoother, without a scar in sight.

This procedure is an optimal solution to treat the hanging folds of the vagina, which create a “saggy” labial appearance. Many women experience this effect due to genetics or age. The labia majora can begin losing elasticity and collagen over time, just like the rest of the body’s skin surface. Fat transfer reverses this undesirable appearance while visually adding a refreshed and plump look.

Patients can wear what they desire without the slightest hesitation. Sexual intimacy with one’s partner may also improve because of the revisions made by the surgery. The new fat acts as a barrier to friction, improving the comfort level, and increasing satisfaction.

What is Fat Transfer to the Labia Majora?

During the minimally invasive procedure, unwanted fat is extracted from other body areas and injected into the labia majora, leaving the tissue looking smoother and fuller. The survival rate of fat is good but very deflated anatomy may require more than one fat transfer session.

Conducted in several steps, patients first go under local (most cases) or general anesthesia ahead of the transfer. Through extraction, fat is removed from the donor site, harvested, and injected. Patients reap all the benefits of an immediate result once the fat is injected while avoiding scarring. This procedure delivers a much more manageable, faster, and less painful healing process.

How the Procedure Works

It is important to note that before and after care pose as an essential duo needed to achieve the most effective results from this fat transfer. Failure to properly prepare and care for your body could come at the cost of your ‌result.

Before & Preparation

  • No smoking at least six weeks before the procedure. Complications such as poor fat take, infection and bleeding can stem from smoking.
  • Maintaining your ideal weight. Maintaining your ideal weight beforehand avoids changes to your final results. Significant fluctuations in size can alter the shape and size of the procedure results.
  • Consult with your plastic surgeon for a thorough health screening and evaluation.

During the Procedure

  • Patients are placed under local (most cases) or general anesthesia.
  • Your surgeon will identify and mark the area for fat extraction.
  • Your surgeon will use a small fluid tube called a cannula to drain a small percentage of fat from the area.
  • During this time, patients may be alert if under local anesthesia but not in pain. It is most common to feel minimal to heavy pressure on the area.
  • Your surgeon will harvest the fat through syringe suction and inject it into the labia.
  • The procedure typically lasts for a few hours, depending on how much fat needs to be harvested.

Aftercare & Recovery

  • Some patients can drive home the same day as their procedure and experience little to no downtime. No patient is the same; therefore, others can take up to a week to recover.
  • Although many patients do not experience intense pain, your provider may prescribe narcotic pain relief medication.
  • Patients should avoid overexerting their energy caused by working out or having sex.
  • Avoid tampons and showering until the day after the procedure.
  • Patients can resume their normal activities typically after a week out of the procedure.
  • Discontinue using any supplements or pills expressed by your surgeon.
  • Smoking before or after surgery is not ideal but can be resumed four weeks after the surgery.

Similar & Related Procedures

  • Injectable Treatment to Labia: A similar but impermanent procedure to fat transfer where Renuva is used instead of a patient’s natural fat.
  • Perineoplasty: This surgery focuses on tightening the vaginal wall and anus rather than the labia and comes with a more strenuous, long-term recovery.
  • Clitoral Hood Reduction: In this procedure, the labia is not addressed. Instead, attention is given to the excess folds lying over the clitoris.
  • Vaginoplasty: A full revisional surgery of the vagina for a tighter vaginal canal, but comes with surgical scars and stitching which is not found in a fat transfer.
  • Labiaplasty: A more invasive surgery than a fat transfer where the external labia is cut and stitched back together resulting in a longer recovery.
  • Perineal Scar Revision: A procedure solely to correct the shape of a botched episiotomy.
  • Monsplasty: Unlike a fat transfer, this procedure removes excess protruding skin on the upper area of the vulva with a recovery ranging from two to six weeks.

The labia can be injected with donor or synthetic filler to increase the plumpness or volume through a fat transfer procedure.

When the donor fat is injected into the labia, some fat cells live and a percentage die. The amount that survives remains and is permanent.

Your labia can be lipoed through the procedure known as labiaplasty. Undergoing this process is invasive as the labia is surgically cut into a smaller state.

In a fat transfer procedure, fat is harvested from an area and injected into the desired location.

To determine which procedure is better, you must first consider the circumstances. Suppose a potential patient does not have enough donor fat for a surgeon to perform a fat transfer. In that case, they could only enhance the said area with implants. However, using the patient's fat is ideal. It creates a more natural look and decreases the chances of the body rejecting the fat.

Assuming there are no extreme fluctuations in the health or weight of the patient, the results from the fat transfer will be permanent. Other factors include the amount of fat injected and the technique used to attain the fat.
