V-Tyte Labiaplasty

Some women are born with an overabundance of labial tissue while for others, it is the result of childbirth and/or age. Many don’t like how this looks. Furthermore, when the skin of the inner labia, which covers your clitoris and vaginal opening, hangs below the outer labia, it can be painful, inhibiting your sex life, exercise routine and even which clothes you wear. A labiaplasty, also called aesthetic vaginal surgery, is a procedure to improve the function and/or aesthetics of the labia minora.

Ideal Candidate

Figuring out whether or not you are a candidate for a labiaplasty is always going to start with an in-person exam. During your consultation at her Beverly Hills office, Dr. Nazarian will listen closely to what is bothering you about your labia. She will then perform a thorough physical examination to assess your vaginal skin’s tone, texture and laxity. Typically, you will look with a mirror as she goes over your anatomy and what can be done to achieve your goals. An ideal candidate for a labiaplasty or vaginal rejuvenation is any healthy woman who has a functional or aesthetic issue with her labia. An excess of tissue can cause one or both of the inner labia to hang below the outer labia. This may result in irritation, chafing and pain during:
  • intercourse
  • riding a bike
  • an exercise class
  • horseback riding
A woman with enlarged labia may also have issues wearing tight fitting clothes such as skinny jeans and bathing suits. Furthermore, with the ever-increasing popularity of less hair in the pubic area, many patients just don’t like the look of their labia.

Labiaplasty Procedure

A labiaplasty is a fairly simple surgical procedure to reduce and/or reshape your labia minora. It can be performed on its own or combined with another procedure such as a:
  • abdominoplasty
  • Mommy Makeover
  • breast augmentation
  • liposuction
  • fat transfer to the labia majora
  • skin lightening
  • Sculptra injection to the labia majora
  • diVa vaginal rejuvenation laser for tightening on the inside
  • Pelleve radiofrequency for tightening of the labia majora (hair-bearing labia)
A V-Tyte labiaplasty is typically done in our Beverly Hills office as an outpatient procedure, awake under local anesthesia. The whole procedure only takes about 1 hour. First, a nurse will apply a strong numbing cream to your labia. This will help to eliminate or reduce any discomfort that may result from the anesthetic injections. Once you are completely numb, Dr. Nazarian will begin the procedure. There are a few different techniques. The right one for you is going to depend on your anatomy and needs. Clitoral hood reduction is also necessary for some patients and Dr. Nazarian will review this with you if you are a good candidate for this procedure.

Do you do a labiaplasty under general or local anesthesia?

About 99% of my labiaplasty procedures are done under local anesthesia. I’m typically talking with the patient the whole time about our childhoods and lives. However, I will use general anesthesia if the patient wants it or if the labiaplasty is being combined with another surgical procedure such as a tummy tuck or Mommy Makeover.

Trim Labiaplasty Technique vs. Wedge Labiaplasty Technique

There are a number of ways that a surgeon can perform a labiaplasty. The two most common techniques are the trim labiaplasty technique and the wedge labiaplasty technique. Most surgeons use the trim technique. It involves an incision all along the outer edge of the inner labia. Dr. Nazarian is not a fan of this technique as there is always a risk of taking too much and the scar is right at the edge of the labia minora where it is more visible. She will, however, utilize the trim labiaplasty technique on patients whose labia edge is not as attractive as it could be. In these cases, the benefit of prettying up the edge is worth the incision line.  Dr. Nazarian generally prefers the wedge labiaplasty technique in which she removes a V-shaped wedge of tissue from both sides of the labia. She then stitches the incisions closed with absorbable sutures (no suture removal needed). It allows her to reduce the size of the inner labia and improve the shape of the vagina while maintaining its natural contour. Furthermore, the scar is located inside the vaginal opening so there is no risk of it being visible. In her experience, the wedge labiaplasty technique delivers the most natural looking result as well as the best aesthetic outcome.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Who is a good candidate for a labiaplasty?

I really see two distinct types of labiaplasty patients. There are those who have a functional problem such as pain during intercourse, discomfort while riding a bike, and chafing. And then there are those who are bothered by the aesthetics of their labia. They don’t like how things look down there, and just want a cuter look.

Is it possible to lose sensation following a labiaplasty?

You obviously always want to see a really experienced surgeon who does a lot of labiaplasty procedures. This will help to reduce any potential risks. I have personally never had a patient lose sensation or suffer any nerve damage. But I do tend to stay very posterior when making my incisions so I don’t go anywhere near the nerves that serve the clitoris.

What’s the healing process like?

In terms of healing, I want you to take it super easy for 3 days. Just lounge on the couch with a pillow under your butt, and binge on Netflix. Apply ice to your labia with a towel. This will help with the post op bruising and swelling. Don’t be alarmed if both get worse over the first 3 days. This is normal. Things tend to mellow out on day 4. Just continue to ice as much as possible. For the first two weeks, you are still at risk for bleeding so take things slow. A light walk is ok, but I want you to avoid strenuous exercise. After two weeks, you can ease back into things, but still stay away from anything like SoulCycle which puts direct pressure on the area. Listen to your body, and if something hurts, back off.

When can I have sex again?

I like patients to wait about 4 weeks before returning to sex or even inserting a tampon. Some women feel better before then, give it a go and are fine so this isn’t a hard and fast rule. Bottom line, you want to listen to your body.

Can I still have the procedure done if I have my period?

Definitely. In fact, it can be an ideal time since you are going to have some spotting anyway.
