A neurotoxin like Botox, Dysport or Xeomin is a fast, simple way to combat and even prevent these early signs of aging. Not only will you look better, but you will also feel better. This is one of the reasons why neurotoxin treatment is the # 1 cosmetic procedure in the United States year after year.

Difference Between Botox and Dysport

While Botox is the most common neurotoxin and has become synonymous with the procedure, Dysport and Xeomin are two other great options. Each has subtle differences. However, they all work to improve wrinkles by temporarily relaxing the underlying muscles in the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes and mouth/jaw. By reducing the number of daily contractions with a neurotoxin injection, the end result is skin that appears naturally smooth and more youthful. Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Sheila Nazarian, is passionate about the many benefits of neurotoxin treatments for her Beverly Hills patients as well as those who travel in to see her from out-of-town. She also practices what she preaches. She began using neurotoxins on herself in her late 20’s as a preventative measure. While she will use a neurotoxin as a stand alone procedure, she will also combine Botox, Dysport or Xeomin injections with fillers or skin treatments like lasers or peels. This one-two punch is often referred to as a non-surgical facelift. However, one of the keys to an extraordinary result is seeing a highly skilled injector.

Botox, Dysport & Xeomin Consultation

It’s important to remember that any injectables procedure is still a medical procedure. You want to see someone with the skill, artistry, and training to deliver a safe, exemplary result. When a neurotoxin such as Botox, Dysport or Xeomin is placed incorrectly, it will make the face look unnatural and asymmetric. Dr. Nazarian and her highly qualified team take patient safety, and natural looking results very seriously. This is why she always encourages patients who are interested in Botox to come in to her Beverly Hills office for an in-person consultation or to schedule a virtual consult. During your neurotoxin consultation, she and her team will listen closely to your concerns and goals. She will perform a careful physical examination, assessing your skin tone, texture and muscle movement. Then, together, you will come up with the best plan to achieve your ideal outcome. This will often mean changing up your skincare regime so that you are using the right products at home. It may also include other office based procedures. We want you to look and feel your best so please let us know what skincare products you’ve tried in the past as well as what you are currently using.

Treatment Areas

During your procedure, Dr. Nazarian or one of her trained injectors will inject a tiny amount of Botox, Dysport or Xeomin through a very fine needle into the underlying active muscles that are causing your lines and wrinkles. The number of injections will depend on the size of the treatment area and whether or not multiple areas are being addressed at once. The most common treatment areas for a neurotoxin injection are the: forehead the “11” frown lines between the eyes crow’s feet around the mouth masseter muscles Neurotoxin treatment can also be used to treat: eyelid spasms headaches jaw clenching excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the hands, feet and armpits However, in the case of excessive sweating of the armpits, Dr. Nazarian offers her patients a more permanent solution called miraDry.

Benefits of Botox

The main benefit of Botox is a noticeable, yet totally natural reduction in your fine lines and wrinkles. When you look in the mirror, your skin will appear smoother and more youthful looking. The procedure is performed in the office, and takes about an hour. Best of all, after your neurotoxin treatment, you can immediately return to your daily activities. While Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are most often used to treat and even prevent future wrinkles, Dr. Nazarian will also use them to correct facial asymmetry in what is known as facial shaping. No face is perfectly symmetrical. However, some patients suffer from more of an imbalance than others. Neurotoxins are an effective tool to help bring facial balance and harmony.

Not really. While there is a brief pinch at the injection site, this discomfort fades quickly. However, pain is subjective. Some patients are simply more sensitive than others. This is why I offer my patients multiple options when it comes to numbing the treatment area. These include a topical numbing cream, a numbing injection, ice rollers or Nitronox which is the laughing gas that you often get at the dentist’s office. If you are super sensitive or anxious, just let me know during your consultation and we will discuss the best option for you.

No. As with many non-surgical modalities, the results are not permanent. How long you maintain your improvement will really depend on the treatment area, and how much product was used. For example, high movement areas such as the crow’s feet will dissipate faster than the forehead. In general, however, your neurotoxin results should last about 3 months. I have found that some patients get a longer lasting result when they schedule regular appointments.

It depends. I started using Dysport in my late 20’s as a way to prevent wrinkles from forming. This is the age at which the collagen and elastin in the skin begin to diminish and I wanted to do everything possible to keep my skin smooth. In general, I tell patients that the right age to start is whenever they’re bothered by their fine lines and wrinkles. It is honestly different for everyone.

The best way to guarantee a natural looking result is to see a trained injector with a lot of experience who looks natural themselves. This is a procedure where skill really makes a difference. Placing Botox, Dysport of Xeomin properly is truly an art form. While you don’t necessarily need to see a plastic surgeon (my other injectors are excellent), I do know and understand anatomy from the inside out. This is why I spend a lot of time with my nurses and physician assistant injectors going over anatomy. We also all go to training workshops to stay abreast of the latest and greatest.

I’m confused. No. They do totally different things. A neurotoxin works by relaxing the underlying muscles so it can only make you look as good as you do when your face is not moving. It cannot fill in a deeply etched line. In short, Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are wrinkle relaxers not wrinkle erasers. Over time however, with injections 3-4 times a year, I’ve found that wrinkles do relax and fade if they are not too deeply etched.

No. Unlike any of the hyaluronic acid or HA fillers which can be reversed, neurotoxin injections are not reversible… You simply have to wait for the effects to wear off with time. This is another reason why it is so important to see a highly skilled injector. Many doctors, nurses and PAs with no aesthetic training are offering injections. I don’t think it is smart to see just anyone for your Botox, Dysport or Xeomin injections. Do your homework!

I like some movement. It’s natural looking. We use particular types of neurotoxin at lower dosages to still maintain some movement. Just know that less neurotoxin means that your results may last less than 3 months. If you are ok with that, then so are we!

While they both work in the same way, Xeomin is different from Botox in that it only contains botulinum toxin A. There are no other additives. This makes Xeomin what’s called a “pure form” injectable. Patients are therefore less likely to develop antibodies to Xeomin like some do with Botox.

It may take up to two weeks before you see your final results after your Dysport injection so be patient. But I promise that they are worth the wait!
