Panniculectomy

A panniculectomy is a procedure that is done by a professional plastic surgeon to remove excess hanging skin. The hanging skin is sometimes referred to as a pannus. This hanging skin can also be accompanied by fat and is located in the abdomen region. This helps to counter the body, but does not tighten the abdominal muscles like with a tummy tuck.

Panniculectomy vs Tummy Tuck

You may be wondering what the differences are between a panniculectomy and getting a tummy tuck. Both of the procedures have a goal to get rid of loose hanging skin. This loose hanging skin is often a result of weight loss. Surgeons will typically recommend a panniculectomy if the remaining skin is causing medical side effects and affecting the quality of your life. A tummy tuck is done more so for cosmetic reasons, but will also tighten abdominal muscles. Your cosmetic surgeon can talk to you more in depth about which procedure may be the best option for you and your needs.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The surgeon will walk the patient through the entire process beforehand, answering any questions or address any concerns you may have. The patient will be placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will make at least one, sometimes two, incisions in order to remove the excess skin and fat. Skin will then be pulled. Depending on the patient and their needs, the procedure could take three to five hours. Physical activity is typically limited after the procedure for the first few months.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Is a Panniculectomy covered by Medicare?

Panniculectomy involves removal of hanging skin and fat from the abdominal region, which may or may not be medically necessary. Under Medicare, panniculectomy is generally regarded as cosmetic surgery. However, this will not be the case if the procedure is deemed medically necessary. Each case will differ from person to person.

How do I prepare for a Panniculectomy?

Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions on how to prepare for the surgery. You will not be able to smoke prior to the surgery or take certain medications. Prepare a list of questions to ask your doctor and always keep your paperwork nearby in case you have a question.

How much weight do you lose after Panniculectomy?

Panniculectomy will remove a patient’s excess hanging skin, as well as fat. This is usually done after a patient has experienced weight loss surgery. Removal of this skin can lead to the removal of more weight off the body. However, how much weight is lost will depend on each individual.
