What to Expect

Chin implant surgery, or chin augmentation, is a medical procedure designed to refine the contour of the chin bone, which changes its appearance and transforms the entire face. This procedure aims to create harmony between the different angles of the face and head, balancing out the dimensions and producing a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Several factors influence the prominence of your chin, primarily genetics, aging, weight fluctuations, and jaw issues. Typically, many chin implant candidates will also receive a rhinoplasty at the same time, as the appearance of the chin and nose are often related (a less pronounced chin will make a more prominent nose stand out more, and vice versa).

Chin implants are often performed simultaneously with a facelift or neck lift to ensure that the jawline is appropriately proportioned to complement the rest of the face. However, you can receive a chin implant on its own without undergoing a companion procedure. Your surgeon will help you determine whether a chin augmentation on its own will allow you to reach your aesthetic goals or if another auxiliary procedure will be needed.

What Is a Chin Implant?

A chin implant in Beverly Hills improves facial appearance & symmetry by creating a more contoured jaw & chin area. Also known as chin augmentation, this procedure aims to restore harmony to your facial features, allowing you to feel more confident in your appearance. Chin augmentation can help correct a "weak" or recessed chin, increase definition of the neck and jawline, or reduce the appearance of a "double" or full chin caused by a small chin bone. This customizable procedure is suitable for anyone, male or female, seeking a permanent solution to acquire a more prominent and symmetrical appearance.

Chin Implant Technique

Though chin implant procedures are slightly more invasive than some other beauty-enhancing procedures, the process is relatively simple.

Types of Procedures

There are a few different ways that plastic surgeons change the shape of a patient’s chin through surgery. As we mentioned above, a healthy jawbone is crucial for the success of a chin implant placement, as the implant needs a stable base on which to rest. The health of a patient’s jaw and its size will help the surgeon determine the proper size and shape of the implant to create the optimal result for the patient.

Patients that desire a “stronger” chin (i.e., the appearance of a dimpled or squarer chin) will usually opt for shaped implants, also known as anatomical implants. These implants can be specially shaped to make a chin look more rounded and natural or squarer and more pronounced, allowing plastic surgeons to create their patient’s ideal look.

Shaped implants consist of a solid type of silicone called Silastic. These implants have a stiff, rubbery feel outside of the chin, but they simply feel like a natural part of the jaw once inserted. Silastic implants tend to be incredibly resistant to infection and are relatively easy to remove if needed.

Your surgeon will make a small incision either below the chin or inside the mouth to insert the implant. Most surgeons will give patients the option of being awake or asleep for the surgery. Still, anesthesia is used either way for optimal patient comfort. No dressings or drains are needed other than a few stitches that will dissolve on their own.

Chin Implant Prep, Recovery & Safety

Here’s a breakdown of the preparation and recovery details of chin implant surgery.

Preparation

  • Clear your chin implant surgery with your dentist or orthodontist before your procedure.
  • Keep in mind that avoiding blood thinners and smoking for multiple weeks before your appointment can ease the recovery process.
  • We recommend increasing your protein intake before and after surgery to help expedite the healing process.
  • Dieting is not recommended before or after surgery.
  • We encourage patients to begin taking medical-grade arnica, bromelain, and Vitamin K one month before their operation. These are available in the office or online at The Skin Spot.

Day of the procedure

  • If using general anesthesia, you are not permitted to eat or drink anything after midnight unless specifically told otherwise by your anesthesiologist.

Recovery

  • You may experience some swelling or a tight or stretched sensation in your chin post-op.
  • Most surgeons recommend that patients avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks after the procedure.
  • Contact your surgeon if you experience any unusual bleeding, fever, or other extreme symptoms.
  • We recommend sleeping with your head elevated for the first few days after your procedure to control swelling.
  • In the few days following your procedure, patients can use ice therapy to help reduce the swelling around the chin and lips.
  • Avoid putting pressure on the chin area for six weeks after your procedure.

Safety

As long as your jaw is in good health, chin implants are perfectly safe and healthy. If you have any concerns, make sure to check with your primary care doctor before undergoing the procedure. However, as long as your surgeon is made aware of your medical history, they should be able to determine whether the procedure is safe for you.

Am I a Good Chin Implant Candidate?

Chin implant surgery is generally safe for adults of all ages and lifestyles. However, since the chin is connected to the jaw and teeth, it’s essential to ensure you have good dental and bone health before undergoing a chin implant procedure.

You could be a great candidate for a chin implant as long as you’re experiencing no serious dental or jaw issues. The chin implant procedure may be beneficial if a profile view of your face shows that your chin recedes more into your facial structure than your nose. Generally, an imbalance between the nose and chin creates misalignment in the appearance of the face, leading to the desire for a more prominent chin to reestablish balance.

Ideal Chin Implant Candidate

The ideal candidate for chin implant surgery has no underlying dental or jaw issues and is in good health, which helps to make the recovery process as smooth as possible. Consult with your surgeon to find out if the recession of your chin might be due to a jaw issue that could be better treated by orthodontic surgery. Keep in mind that some patients require orthodontic and chin implant surgery to achieve the jaw and chin appearance they desire.

Some surgical cosmetic procedures produce an array of side effects. While chin augmentation has very few side effects and possible complications, the procedure must be completed by a professional cosmetic surgeon. Your cosmetic surgeon can advise you on whether the procedure is right for you.

Your cosmetic surgeon will determine the chin implant that is right for you. Typically, chin implants are lifelong. The final results of a chin augmentation procedure may take several months to show.

Chin implants help the overall appearance of the face, in addition to enhancing the chin area’s projection. The time the procedure takes to complete can vary from individual to individual but typically is not longer than an hour. Patients may experience some swelling, and their diet in the period after the procedure may be limited.
