Nipple Areola Reduction

Nipple reduction surgery decreases the size and length of the nipples through barely visible incisions. Excessively protruding nipples can be a source of insecurity, but thankfully, this procedure is quick and easy with minimal risk.

The average nipple is one centimeter in diameter. Those with nipple hypertrophy or enlarged nipples have nipples reaching two centimeters or more. Nipples expansion tends to occur either during puberty or after pregnancy and causes a more spherical shape.

Nipples that are longer than usual often cause lower self-esteem for several reasons, including:

  • Asymmetry
  • Drooping
  • Prominence under light and tight clothing
  • Chafing and irritation from rubbing against clothes

Types of Nipple Reduction

There are several different variations of nipple reduction, depending on what is needed to shape the nipple. There are procedures to help decrease the length and width of the nipple. These include:

Circumcision

Dr. Nazarian removes the skin around the neck of your nipple. This method of nipple reduction preserves your milk ducts and the nipple tip.

Amputation

Dr. Nazarian removes the tip of your nipple and the excess height. Normal sensation returns within a month of the procedure.

Wedge resection

While this procedure reduces both the height and width of your nipple, it also destroys your milk ducts, making you unable to breastfeed.

Flaps

Dr. Nazarian uses a geometric incision to reduce the height and diameter of your nipples. Both function and sensitivity remain intact.

Grafting

After a simple amputation, Dr. Nazarian implants extremely thin tissue into your nipple.

Nipple Reduction Procedure

A nipple reduction procedure can often be performed during other procedures or in-office by itself. Typically performed in under one hour, the results last a lifetime! There is a chance of not being able to breastfeed after the procedure, so please take this into account when making your decision on the timing of this procedure. The incisions are barely visible on the areola or nipple, and the risks are low. Nipple reduction surgery shortens nipple length and creates a balance between size and projection. Dr. Nazarian improves the aesthetics of your breasts while maintaining breast functionality.

Nipple Reduction Surgery

Nipple reduction surgery takes about an hour and begins with your doctor administering local anesthesia. An incision is then made in your nipple and the excess tissue is removed. The surgeon then places permanent sutures in the incisions before closing and dressing your breasts.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Can nipples be reduced?

If genetics, injury, breastfeeding, or age have made your nipples look odd, surgery helps correct nipples that are disproportionately sized compared to the rest of your breast. Medical procedures improve the appearance of your breasts by fixing the size and shape of your nipples.

How much does it cost to get a nipple reduction?

The average cost for most nipple reduction procedures is between $1,000-$5,000. The price depends on:

  • Doctor used
  • Facility fees
  • Amount of tissue removed
  • Anesthesia used
Insurance rarely covers cosmetic procedures. Many surgeons offer payment plans and medical finance options.

How Is Nipple Reduction Surgery Performed?

You receive local anesthesia during the procedure. An incision is made in your nipple, enabling the plastic surgeon to remove excess tissue. The surgeon then places permanent sutures. Finally, the plastic surgeon closes the incision and puts gauze dressing on it. Since you receive local anesthesia during this surgery, you won’t experience nausea or dizziness associated with general anesthesia.

How Long Does Areola Reduction Surgery Take?

Since it’s performed using local anesthesia, areola reduction surgery usually takes about an hour. After the procedure, patients are typically able to drive themselves home. It’s important to find a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform the surgery so that the procedure is safe and provides the desired results.

Why Is My Areola So Big?

Genetics usually determine the size of your areolas, but that may not be the only reason yours are large. Areolas are part of your skin, so that means they can stretch. For example, age, weight fluctuations, and trauma can cause them to get larger. If you lose weight, there’s no guarantee that your areolas will return to their original size.

Can You Get a Nipple Reduction Surgery?

Both men and women can get nipple reduction surgery. If you feel your nipples are too long, too large, or hang down too low, you may want to consider nipple reduction. If your breasts have stopped growing, you may be a candidate for this procedure. Talk with a board-certified plastic surgeon to determine if you are a good fit for nipple reduction surgery.

Does Nipple Reduction Leave Scars?

Nipple reduction is a minor surgery, so you should have little to no scarring. Talk with your plastic surgeon to learn where and how large your scars will be. Follow your surgeon’s post-operative directions in order to properly heal with minimal scarring. Any scars that occur after a nipple reduction will fade over time.
