V-Tuck Tummy Tuck

There is nothing better than working hard to take off excess weight. It’s great for your health and your self-esteem. But sometimes gaining and losing a lot of weight can result in a deflated appearance in your abdominal region. After pregnancy, for example, you may have lost the pounds, but your skin and muscles may have stretched past their ability to “bounce back”.

At Nazarian Plastic Surgery, it is our mission to help women feel absolutely fantastic. Our V-Tuck Tummy Tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is the ideal procedure for lifting and tightening your abdominal region. This highly effective and safe surgical procedure removes excess skin and tightens loose abdominal muscles to create a firm, smooth abdominal wall, and a smaller waistline.

V-Tuck Tummy Tuck Consultation

During your in-person or virtual consultation at her Beverly Hills office, Dr. Nazarian will listen closely to what bothers you about your body contour. She will ask if you’ve had any prior surgeries and/or procedures including a C-section. Then, she will perform an extensive physical examination to assess whether or not you have any muscle laxity, hernias, and the degree and directionality of skin laxity in your abdominal region. This is important. Most women who come in for a tummy tuck consultation want a mini-tummy tuck because it sounds less invasive. But a mini-tummy tuck is only viable for patients whose excess skin is located solely below the belly button, and who do not have muscle laxity. Most patients who have had children and/or lost a large amount of weight are not good candidates for a mini-tummy tuck. Part of the reason is that both pregnancy and weight gain can cause diastasis. This looseness is a literal separation or splaying of your abdominal muscles, and often manifests as a bulge.  When this happens, the only way to correct it is with surgery. During your V-Tuck Tummy Tuck procedure, Dr. Nazarian will corset together the right and left sides of the abdominal muscles with sutures, eliminating any bump or bulge. The end result is a lifted, lean torso.

Are You a Candidate for a V-Tuck Tummy Tuck?

The ideal V-Tuck Tummy Tuck patient is someone in good overall health who is bothered by:
  • weak abdominal muscles due to pregnancy, age, weight loss/gain
  • excess drooping skin in the abdominal area
  • a “pooch” of excess fat in the lower abdomen that doesn’t respond to diet and/or exercise
It is also important that any potential V-Tuck Tummy Tuck patient is within 15 pounds of a maintainable goal weight. Despite what the media may lead you to believe, abdominoplasty is not weight loss surgery. It is about body contouring. Furthermore, if you gain a significant amount of weight after your surgery, typically over 20 pounds, this can adversely affect your results. This is why Dr. Nazarian always advises her tummy tuck patients to wait until they are completely finished having children before considering a V-Tuck Tummy Tuck procedure.

Full Tummy Tuck vs. Mini-Tummy Tuck

Deciding whether or not a patient needs a full tummy tuck or mini-tummy tuck centers around the belly button. The full tummy tuck addresses the entirety of the abdomen. This includes loose skin and muscle both above and below your belly button. During the full tummy tuck procedure, your belly button is actually allowed to drop down and away from the surrounding tissue and then “brought out” in a new location through the pulled-down skin. In other words, the belly button remains connected in place. It is simply surrounded by newly relocated skin. A partial or mini-tummy tuck is only good for those patients who have a moderate amount of loose skin, located solely below the belly button. The plus side of the mini-tummy tuck is that it sometimes requires a shorter incision since it addresses a smaller piece of real estate. This, in turn, may make the recovery faster. The downside is that anyone who has stretched out their stomach muscles thanks to pregnancy or weight gain, or whose skin has become severely lax is not a good candidate for a mini-tummy tuck. And if that patient has one, she is going to be disappointed in her results.

V-Tuck Tummy Tuck Procedure

A V-Tuck Tummy Tuck is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia. With the full tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Nazarian will make an incision along the lower abdomen, 5cm above the clitoris. This way, any subsequent scar will be nicely hidden in your underwear. The length of the incision is really dictated by the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed. Dr. Nazarian will then bring together the abdominal muscles so that they form a corset. This creates a tighter, flattened abdominal wall. Next, she removes any excess skin and/or fat. Last, she creates a new spot for your belly button. With a partial or mini-tummy tuck, the incision can be shorter, extending just above and beyond the pubic bone, and the navel is rarely repositioned. Since the abdomen works in conjunction with the hips, Dr. Nazarian will typically perform liposuction on the flanks in order to re-shape the entire torso. She may also combine a V-Tuck Tummy Tuck with other body contouring procedures such as breast surgery, a Brazilian Butt Lift, or a Mommy Makeover.

Frequently
Asked Questions

I have had two kids. Is it possible to get my pre-pregnancy flat stomach without surgery?

It depends. If you are still carrying around a few extra pregnancy pounds, I always recommend starting with a healthy eating plan and exercise regime. Really commit to taking care of yourself and see if that helps. If it doesn’t, come in and speak with us. However, if your weight is good and you already exercise regularly, but you still have a hanging belly then yes, you are probably going to need surgery.

How much time do I really need to take off from work for a tummy tuck?

I typically tell my patients that they are going to need at least two weeks. If you have a super strenuous job, you may need more time or you may need to dial things back at work for a while. I can give you a better idea of exactly what to expect in terms of your recovery after I see you in-person during your consultation.

I hear that tummy tuck results can take awhile. Is this true?

Yes and no. You will definitely notice the change in your body contour immediately. But you will also be swollen and bruised following your tummy tuck surgery. It’s just the price we pay for a flat stomach. It can take anywhere from 3-6 months for your swelling to fully reside. So, final, final results may take a while, but you will look better and better during that period. An abdominoplasty requires a bit of patience, but the pay-off is well worth it.

Is the recovery from a tummy tuck as painful as everyone says?

Most of my tummy tuck patients find the recovery really tolerable. I do inject long-lasting local anesthetic to give you an abdominal nerve block during surgery and this helps a lot! Yes, you will have some discomfort. At the aftercare facility, they will give you narcotics to take that really help curb the pain.  Most of my patients stay there for 3 days – these are the most uncomfortable days. I will prescribe prescription pain medications as well as antibiotics to take at the aftercare facility and when you go home.

I want a tummy tuck, but I am not sure that I am finished having kids. Should I wait?

I think it’s best to wait. Otherwise, the next pregnancy could re-stretch the skin and muscles in your abdomen. This means that you might need another tummy tuck. Most patients don’t want to go through it twice.

Can my lower belly fat be addressed with liposuction instead of an abdominoplasty?

Yes. But liposuction can only address the excess fat. It will do nothing for loose skin. I often combine liposuction with a minimally invasive procedure called BodyTite to tighten the skin. But though fantastic, this combination will not affect any looseness in the muscles. A tummy tuck is the gold standard for a reason. The right choice is really going to depend on your needs and ability to tolerate downtime. Sometimes, patients decide on a more moderate procedure that they know won’t deliver a totally flat stomach because it is simply easier for their current lifestyle. That’s cool. Just make sure to manage your expectations appropriately.
